CAMEO: Conservation and Art Material Encyclopedia Online: "A searchable encyclopedia, CAMEO contains chemical, physical, visual, and analytical information on over 10,000 historic and contemporary materials used in the conservation, preservation, and production of artistic, architectural, and archaeological materials."

Art in Context: Provides access to information on artists, museums, galleries, exhibitions, images.
Art History Resources on the Web: Links to sites containing essays, images and bibliographies covering art from pre-history to today. The site is arranged by culture and time period. Highly recommended.
ArtOnline: Guide to art exhibits around the world.
Ceramics Today: Ceramics Today is a comprehensive independent ceramics site with its first incarnation as Claynet followed by ceramics.about.com. Over the years hundreds of articles were written while the links database grew to be the most comprehensive on the Net.
Mother of All Art and Art History Links: Includes research resources, visual collections, image collections, fine arts schools, art museums and more.
Timeline of Art History (Metropolitan Museum of Art): Provides "a basic geographical and chronological context for the history of art around the world, from prehistory to the present."
Voice of the Shuttle: Art & Art History Page: Large list of links arranged by categories: museums, galleries, clipart, auctions, journals, art studio programs, and more. Requires some digging to locate specific resources, but very comprehensive.
World Wide Arts Resources: "Offers the definitive, interactive gateway to all exemplars of qualitative arts information and culture on the Internet. Artists, museums, galleries, art history, arts education, antiques, performing arts ranging from dance to opera, classified ads, resume postings and more."

Panoramas: The North American Landscape in Art

Artcyclopedia: The Guide to Museum-Quality Art on the Internet: "The definitive guide to great art online, at art museum sites and image archives worldwide." Search by artist's name, or browse by movement, medium, subject, or nationality. Provides links to online exhibits.
Explore Art: Search the Getty Museum online art collection by keyword, or browse by type of art or by subject.
Finding Images on the Web: Instructions plus links to images of advertisements, the arts, clip art, maps, photography, sciences.
Web Gallery of Art: Digital reproductions of 13,000 paintings and sculpture (1150 AD-1800 AD).

Web Museum: A very large collection of images with biographical information on individual artists.
World Art Treasures: 100,000 slides belonging to the Jacques-Edouard Berger Foundation covering major civilizations including Egypt, China, Japan, India, and Europe. A zoom feature isolates the images on the screen for downloading or printing.

Metropolitan Museum of Art
Smithsonian Institute: Links to the web pages of all 16 museums and galleries of the Smithsonian Institute. Over 140 million artifacts and specimens in its collections, many of which are displayed in online exhibits.
Virtual Library Museums Page: A directory of on-line museums world-wide. Search by museum name, or browse by country, state, or type of museum. Includes brief annotations about the museum sites.

van Gogh: Painted with Words: Vincent van Gogh's Letters to Émile Bernard: Photographic images of van Gogh's letters with software that allows you to zoom in and to translate.
Vermeer: Essential Vermeer: Explores "every facet the life and work of the great 17th c. Dutch painting master. Essential Vermeer is constantly deepened by additions of new and significant studies." Over 250 pages of information.
