Where do I start?

How to find a book

Q: How do I find a book?
A: Use the Milne Library Catalog, an online database of books and other materials owned by Milne Library . A keyword search is a good way to begin. The Milne Library Catalog also is used to find videos/DVDs, reserve items, TAUs (Teaching Aid Units), music CDs, print journals (NOT individual journal articles), scores, and other types of materials. You can limit by document type using the Advanced Search feature.

Q: Where are books located?
A: Most books are located on the 2nd and 3rd floor of Milne Library, arranged by LC call number. Some books are located in the Reference area on the first floor. The Milne Library Catalog gives the exact location for the book. Use these maps of the library.

Q: I can't find the book I need. Where else can I look?
A: Hartwick College. SUNY Oneonta students may borrow materials with a valid SUNY ID card.
A: NetLibrary. A source for e-books that can be read from your computer. Free registration is required. A good source for classic (out of copyright) books as well as new books.
A: WorldCAT. Catalog of books in libraries worldwide. Books can usually be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan.
A: Ask a Reference Librarian if you have trouble finding the book you need!

How to find a newspaper article

Q: How do I find a newspaper article?
A: If you need a recent newspaper article (within the last 25 years) and illustrations are not important, use Lexis-Nexis. Lexis-Nexis provides full text articles from major newspapers, magazines, and regional sources around the world, including full text of the New York Times. Coverage varies, but is usually full text from about 1980.

If you need an older article or if illustrations are important, try the New York Times Archive, 1851-2003. The New York Times Archive provides full page and article images with searchable full text back to the first issue. It is possible to limit by article type including: classified ad, display ad, editorial cartoon, letter, comic, editorial article, review, stock quote, weather, legal notice, and real estate transaction. Occasionally copyright law may prohibit the publisher from putting certain articles or photos online. In this case, you would need to use the microfilm version.

Q: Where are newspapers located?
A: Paper copies of recent newspapers are shelved on newspaper racks in Room 118 of Milne Library. Older copies are on microfilm in the basement.

Interlibrary Loan

Q: What if the book or article is not available at Milne Library?

A: SUNY College at Oneonta faculty, staff and students are eligible to borrow items through the Milne Library Interlibrary Loan Service using your MyILLiad account. You will need to register once for your MyILLiad account, using your Oneonta Username and Password. Although it often takes as little as a few days, uncommon items can take up to several weeks, so be sure to allow plenty of time!

Q: How do I find an article on Reserve?

To find material on reserve in the library, you need to find out if it is on Electronic Reserve or if it is on Reserve at the Circulation/Loan Desk.

- If it is on Electronic Reserve:
Search the ERes system by instructor, course name, or department. You will need a password supplied by your instructor to access these reserves. Adobe Acrobat software must be on your computer to open and print these PDF files.

- If it is on loan at the Circulation/Loan Desk:
Search the Course Reserves section of the Milne Library Catalog to identify your items and find the call number.

You can search for items in a variety of ways including:

* title of reserve item
* course number
* course
* department
* last name of instructor

Note the call number and request the material at the Circulation/Loan Desk on the first floor of the library.
