ESL/COLLEGE EXPERIENCE PROGRAM

At this time, this program is unavailable.  Please contact SUNY Oneonta Office of International Education for further information.

The ESL/College Experience Program is a special program designed to give international participants intensive English language training and an opportunity to attend academic classes at SUNY Oneonta.  This program is recommended for individuals with at least an intermediate level of English language proficiency.  It is ideal for students who wish to practice the English they learned in their home country and also for students who need a little more preparation in English before they are ready to apply for admission to a college.  (A TOEFL score of 450 is required for admissions to the ESL/College Experience Program.)

Home Stay/ESL:  Students will become acclimated to the U.S. and will practice their English during a six-week home stay in the Oneonta area.  For the Fall semester, the six-week home stay begins in mid-July and ends in August, just before classes begin for the semester.  For the Spring semester, the six-week home stay  begins in mid-December and ends in January.  During this time, they will live with a family and participate in trips and visits to museums and other sites.  Toward the end of their home stay, around the last two weeks, students will attend a special 20-hour intensive ESL course at SUNY Oneonta.  (Books for this course are included.)  The program ends at the start of classes for either the Fall or Spring semester.  Students will receive a certificate of completion for this ESL course.

College Experience/ESL:  Upon successful completion of the six-week Home Stay/ESL program, students will begin taking two full-semester ESL courses at SUNY Oneonta : (1) ESL Reading, and (2) ESL Writing.  In addition, students will audit two other academic courses of their choosing.  This allows students to practice their language in a field of interest.  Students will get college credit for these two ESL courses and will be able to get a transcript from the SUNY Oneonta Registrar to document their participation.

Students must sign up for the full program -- the home stay and the following semester.  SUNY Oneonta will issue an I-20 to accepted program participants, and students will attend this program on an F-1 visa for a half-year stay.  Students cannot attend the home stay portion unless they plan to stay for the semester courses that follow.  If a student successfully completes the full program, and they are interested, we would consider them for admission to the College.  In this event, students will not have to retake the TOEFL.
